Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has started shipping its 1.2GHz Athlon and 800MHz AMD Duron processors to computer manufacturers worldwide, with various original equipment manufacturers planning to offer the new chips in their machines.
The Athlon processor is the seventh generation of processor design from AMD, and features 256KB of L2 cache and 128KB of L1 cache on-chip, and 24 additional instructions in its 3DNow! Instruction set. The 200MHz system interface is based on the Alpha EV6 bus protocol.
Compaq will include the Athlon in its Presario 7000 Series of high-end PCs. Hewlett-Packard plans to use the Duron in the HP Pavilion home PC.
AMD Athlon processors are manufactured using AMD`s 0.18-micron process technology in Fab 25 in Austin, Texas and Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany.
The 1.2GHz, 1.1GHz, 1GHz, 950MHz, 900MHz and 850MHz AMD Athlon processors are priced at $612, $460, $350, $282, $215 and $193, respectively, in 1 000-unit quantities. The 800MHz, 750MHz and 700MHz AMD Duron processors are priced at $170, $112 and $88 respectively, each in 1 000-unit quantities.
