Americans cut cable for online streaming

PCMag states.

In the survey of 2 000 US consumers aged between 14 and 75, 9% of respondents said they had already cut their television connections. Moreover, 11% of respondents said they were considering saying goodbye to cable because they could already watch most of their favourite TV shows online.

The Street says that young people, in particular, are leading the way in this trend, with 19% of the 23 to 28 age group giving serious thought to cutting the cord.

That still means four out of five Americans are happy paying for cable in the foreseeable future, and there's no telling how many of that 11% are actually serious about kicking their cable box to the curb. Cable companies have plenty to worry about when it comes to the threat of streaming.

The results claiming that so many customers are eliminating pay TV does not square with industry statistics that show cable operators continue to bleed basic cable subscribers, BroadbandDSLReports.com notes.

Overall, traditional pay TV growth was simply flat last year - with most TV customers simply switching between cable, Telco TV or satellite to grab the best overall deal.
