An inconvenient Al lets iPhone 5 slip

Johannesburg, 22 Sep 2011

Former US vice-president and member of the Apple board Al Gore yesterday inadvertently confirmed the next-generation iPhone will be unveiled next month.

As headline speaker at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit, held in Sandton yesterday, Gore quipped in an aside during his speech, while alluding to technological advancement: “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a punt.”

While the plural in Gore's statement has become cause for speculation as to whether Apple will in fact unveil more than one new handset, it is unlikely. As has been noted, Gore could simply have meant “iPhone's” although he did not elaborate in the speech, so it was not clear.

Gore has been a member of the Apple board for eight years and, according to reports, yesterday's statement was the first time he had ever leaked any information about an upcoming product.

Other Apple news was also leaked yesterday, with All Things reporting that 4 October is the day that Apple will unveil its new product/s.

According to sources close to Apple, new company CEO Tim Cook will preside over the event. Steve Jobs resigned as CEO last month.

The rumour mill is working overtime after images of possible iPhone 5 cases were posted online last week. The images appeared briefly on the site of Case-Mate before being replaced by a cryptic page saying “We'll have your cases when you have your new iPhone”.

Last month, rumours of the iPhone 5's LTE capabilities also surfaced as the device was suspected to be in carrier testing phase.

Apple is, however, yet to make any formal announcements regarding the iPhone 5, and speculation continues as to whether it will be a small upgrade of the iPhone 4 or a major redesign.
