To help organisations minimise the risk to vital information stored on desktop PCs and laptops, Hewlett-Packard Company introduces the HP SureStore AutoBackup family, an entirely new class of backup solution designed to safeguard the high volume of business-critical data residing on mobile computers and networked desktop systems.
It is estimated that nearly 80% of laptop and desktop PCs carry company data, and yet most companies have no backup strategies in place for their employees` hard drives. Typically, the data that resides on servers is backed up, leaving the rest vulnerable to user error, accidental damage or, in the case of laptops, theft.
Portable computers are especially at risk. It is estimated that more than 20% of notebooks used in the field lose data as a result of theft or damage. The U.S. remote and mobile population in 1999 was expected to reach 35.7 million, and an additional 22.2 million laptop computers are expected to be sold worldwide during the year 2000. With laptop hard-drive capacities commonly exceeding 8GB, these numbers indicate that there is a massive and growing volume of vital data at risk, and the cost of replacing data is high.
HP SureStore AutoBackup Products
The first two products in the HP SureStore AutoBackup family are the PC25, suitable for organizations with about 25 client PCs, and the PC100, designed for organisations with about 100 client systems.
HP is the first company to integrate advanced backup and disaster recovery software into a network appliance, built on thin-server technology, that captures changes to hard drive content whenever a PC connects to the network. This happens automatically and runs as a background process that does not interfere with other applications. The system captures only changes to the data backed up, which is typically a small percentage of the total. This means that the daily backup volume is so small -- and the process involved so brief and non-intrusive - that users, in many cases, will be unaware that the procedure is taking place.
Key HP SureStore AutoBackup Benefits
Flexible, automatic backup of valuable business data -- Reduces business risk by protecting client data. An automatic scheduler prompts users to back up, and redundant file elimination minimises network traffic.
15-minute installation process -- No integration, testing and trouble-shooting needed, saving time and money.
Increased user and IT productivity -- Simple drag-and-drop procedures let end-users perform their own restorations, increasing productivity and eliminating the time required for IT staff to restore files.
Easy disaster recovery -- Integrated HP CD-Writer and disaster recovery software with step-by-step instructions make it simple to recover business-critical data.
"This is an impressive and incredible new product for the mobile computing industry. Laptops are far more likely to be damaged or stolen than desktop PCs, so it`s vital that mobile users have a realistic way to protect their data. HP`s AutoBackup solution looks like the answer," says Terri Nozick, Vice President of Market Research at Mobile Insights.
"Backup is no longer a luxury for laptop and desktop PCs. HP has taken NAS technology and applied it in a unique and highly innovative way to solve a pressing business problem, offering an effective approach to protect client data," says Robert Abraham, President, Freeman Reports.
"Products such as this can provide innovative ways to create new markets for thin server technologies. In addition they can show that NAS means more than online or near line storage and that it can be adapted to a variety of applications," says Fara Yale, Senior Industry Analyst at Dataquest.
