Annex backs Intel`s processor number classification system

Johannesburg, 27 Jul 2004

Annex Distribution, a major supplier of Intel product to the local market, is to support the Intel `processor number` campaign. Launched globally, the processor numbers are applied to product within Intel`s notebook and desktop product range in a bid to encourage customers to consider processor features besides just clock speed (GHz), such as front side bus and architecture.

According to the system, numbers are applied to processor brands and also cover families of processors within a brand. The processor number sequence is based on specific aspects such as architecture, clock speeds (GHz), front side bus, cache and future Intel technologies. The individual digits that make up a sequence are merely a means of differentiating between models and hold no other significance.

Information available from Intel states that processor numbers are categorised by a three-digit number sequence such as 7xx, 5xx and 3xx. This number plus the processor family make up the overall `processor name`.

As an example: Intel would have previously marketed the Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting Hyper-Threading Technology 3.40GHz. The new processor numbering system would classify this product as `Intel Pentium 4 processor 550 supporting Hyper-Threading Technology: Processor speed 3.40GHz, 1MB L2 Cache and 800MHz FSB`.

Ravi Perumal, Intel Product Manager at Annex Distribution, says the processor number classification system is an effective means of helping clients to focus on the real advantages of processors and thereby enable them to differentiate within various ranges based on accurate assessments.

"This classification system presents a comprehensive overview of the sum of all given advantages. Annex will provide the necessary information and assistance to clients in order to help them match the right processor with the right environment in order to maximise off benefits," says Perumal.
