ANNEX gives the thumbs up on DVD plus rewriteable format

Johannesburg, 02 Dec 2003

Bill Gradwell, General Manager of ANNEX Distribution, says the market should look on the plus side of DVD rewriteable technology. According to Gradwell, there is increasing interest in DVD+R/+RW over competing dual and minus (DVD-R/-RW) format drives because users are more aware of the benefits.

Advantages, he says, include improved compatibility, user friendliness and cost. The plus format is straightforward and consumers have the option to edit directly on disk, saving both time and money.

It is important to consider the dynamics of the DVD format because this will determine compatibility with the DVD player. Read-only disks aside, there are definitely implications as far as rewriteable technology is concerned.

"DVD plus technology is grabbing the limelight at the moment. Besides the fact that it is backed by leading PC brands, third-party testing suggests that the plus format is compatible for more DVD players and DVD ROM drives than the minus counterpart. The fact that users have the option to edit directly to disk eliminates cumbersome problems of shifting material to the hard disk and then to disk," explains Gradwell.

"In addition, one should consider the fact that dual format presents consumers with a conundrum - what media or mode to use? In addition dual format usually translates to higher manufacturing and support costs due to increased complexity," adds Gradwell.

ANNEX Distribution a focused distributor of hi-tech products to enhance the digital experience for the user. The company considers the growing mobile and wireless market as a strategic part of its development going forward.

"Which is why we continuously analyse the market for new trends and fresh developments, particularly when it comes to digital lifestyle products. We have established partnerships with international vendors such as BenQ and, as a result, are in a position to add value to the local market with knowledge, technology briefs and service. The debate over plus, minus or dual rewriteable technology is certainly not new, but the movement towards plus could be considered a developing trend. Best to watch this space," concludes Gradwell.
