ANNEX: Pushing the benefit of new building blocks

Johannesburg, 24 Oct 2003

Businesses can gain further competitive advantage by enforcing the decision to refresh infrastructure. Bill Gradwell, General Manager of ANNEX Distribution, says replacing what is ultimately costly, outdated infrastructure definitely saves time and money.

ANNEX Distribution is a focused supplier of `building blocks` to sub-Saharan Africa. The company`s product portfolio incorporates CPUs, mobile technology, input devices, multimedia, printers, servers, software, networking, monitors, motherboards, optical storage and chassis components.

Gradwell agrees with the idea that changing desktop PCs every three years and notebook systems every two years represents a substantial saving in time and money because of the reduction in total cost of ownership and security risks, the increase in productivity and simplification of management.

"For example, Intel has brought forward powerful client PCs based on the latest Intel processors that enable multitasking performance, allowing the business to run continuous virus scanning and file encryption programs in the background with minimal end-user disruption. Migration to newer operating systems supports stronger security, including added VPN for tunnelling and built-in smart card support for more defensible authentication and authorisation," he explains.

Gradwell adds that ageing PCs that run older operating systems and applications often cost more to own and manage than newer platforms.

More businesses are considering going the mobile route as part of the overall strategy to upgrade. The notebook has been elevated in status as a core component of the wireless office, says Gradwell. "The preferred supplier of building block solutions to the market. We do not want to compete with the customer at this level. Our intention is to provide the right solutions to help a customer grow their business."

The ANNEX strategy is to enable the customer to brand and push products themselves.

"The wireless space is definitely growing in SA and there is a growing demand for technology and interest in new developments and innovation. We are one of the few vendors to actually offer bare-bone notebook products to the industry and encouraging entrepreneurs to brand and sell the technology. Our intention is to push the Intel mobile CPU, and related technology such as Centrino Processor," he adds.
