Anything but BlackBerry at Yahoo

New Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is implementing a programme for all full- and part-time Yahoo employees called “Yahoo! Smart Phones, Smart Fun!”

The initiative allows employees to choose a new top-of-the-range smartphone from essentially any manufacturer except BlackBerry, and in so doing Yahoo is reportedly discontinuing IT support for BlackBerry devices.

According to a Business Insider report, Mayer sent a memo to employees giving them a choice of an iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, HTC EVO 4G LTE, or the Nokia Lumia 920. Yahoo will cover the data and phone bills for all employees.

The memo states: “Yahoo is moving off of BlackBerrys as our corporate phones and on to smartphones in 22 countries. A few weeks ago, we said that we would look into smartphone penetration rates globally and take those rates into account when deciding on corporate phones.

“We'd like our employees to have devices similar to our users, so we can think and work as the majority of our users do."

The knocks just keep coming for BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM), which announced in July that the release of the first BlackBerry 10 devices would be delayed until next year. BlackBerry 10 is RIM's last hope at regaining some of the market share it has lost to Apple and Android over the last few years.
