The Apache Web server continues to serve up more Web pages than any other server product, according to the most recent Netcraft survey. The open source Web server increased its share to 63% in the June results with Microsoft`s Web server products accounting for just over 20% of the market. Neither product has made significant gains over the past year. Netscape (6%) and Zeus (2,8%) were the only other applications to return significant results.
On the operating system side, however, Microsoft products dominate with around 50% of the market. Linux was the second most popular with just under 30%.
Other operating systems that put in a presentable showing included Solaris and BSD at 7,6% and 6,3% respectively. Unix variations such as HP-UX and Tru-64 accounted for around 2% of the pie with systems such as MacOSX, NetWare and the unidentified portion making up the remaining percentage.
Netcraft reported that the largest users of Windows Web servers were China, SA and Singapore. Linux proved to be more popular in Poland and Hungary and BSD is more common in Russia and Japan.
The apparent anomaly of Apache leading the Web server market while Microsoft dominates the OS pie is explained by the tendency of ISPs and hosting companies to host multiple domains on single machines using virtual hosting. Netcraft said that Microsoft products were more commonly deployed at end-user sites and self-hosted Web sites.
Netcraft gathers information for the survey by polling servers offering Http services and collating the results. The June 2001 results polled around 29,3 million sites.
