APC expands performance Smart-UPS line to offer higher power density in smaller form factor

Johannesburg, 11 Dec 2006

American Power Conversion (APC), a global leader in power availability solutions, has expanded its Smart-UPS RT line to include 6000VA and 8000VA models.

These double conversion online uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes), offer users extremely tight voltage and frequency regulation, internal bypass, and input power factor correction.

The units provide high performance power protection with scalable runtime, which is ideal for supporting voice and data networks in a wide variety of environments including medical labs and light industrial sites.

Delivering high performance power protection in a 3U rack height, the 6000VA model addresses customers' needs for an online UPS that can deliver scalable runtime in a small U space. Until the launch of the Smart-UPS RT 6000AV model, this level of power protection was only available in a 4U or 6U size.

"Global IT trends, such as increasing power density resulting from the use of blade servers, network and server consolidation and migration, are rapidly changing IT networks," said Jim Simonelli, APC's vice-president of the solutions delivery group. "The goal of our Smart-UPS RT line is to not only provide support to power-hungry blade servers and heavily loaded equipment racks, but to offer a flexible form factor allowing standardisation across multiple applications."

The 6000VA and 8000VA models round out the Smart-UPS RT family and give customers the ability to implement pioneering solutions for computer rooms to data centres with 1-20 racks. High power internal chargers allow virtually unlimited additional matching battery packs to comply with aggressive runtime demands of business-critical systems.

The units are available in tower as well as rack-optimised (3U and 6U) models that are tested and certified for use within APC's InfraStruXure architecture. As customers' physical infrastructure needs change and expand, the Smart-UPS RT line helps IT professionals easily configure and use integrated solutions for their networks.

Ideal for applications requiring two hour or longer runtimes, the Smart-UPS RT has the ability to add unlimited hot-swappable battery packs and offers a high efficiency inverter design. Features such as a wide input voltage range (-23% +25% at full load and -52% +25% at half load), intelligent precision charging, and UPS battery management all help ensure maximum battery life. Additionally, a flexible form factor allows easy deployment in either an integrated InfraStruXure solution, an IT rack environment, or as a standalone unit for medical lab or light industrial sites.

The Smart-UPS RT family also offers a wide range of management options. All units come with a remote management capability featuring APC's PowerChute monitoring and management software. In addition, centralised management of the Smart-UPS RT is simple using APC's InfraStruXure Manager as well as other server management tools such as Intel's LAN Manager and similar tools from HP, IBM, Sun, Cisco and other hardware vendors.
