APC monitors the environment

Johannesburg, 18 Apr 2001

Environmental fluctuations are a constant concern for any business running vital network systems. A change in temperature and humidity could have a severe adverse effect on mission critical equipment.

American Power Conversion (APC) has combated this concern by developing a standalone Environmental Monitoring Unit (EMU). It takes just a simple, three-step configuration for IT managers to remotely monitor temperature and humidity, as well as any user-definable external input. Should a change in the environment exceed user-defined thresholds, immediate notification is sent via e-mail or SNMP. Security is assured through MD5 Authentication and the EMU`s dual user-access levels.

"Power protection is only one piece of the availability puzzle," says Carl Kleynhans, country manager: southern Africa at APC. "APC`s EMU makes it easier than ever to reduce the time and money spent repairing damaged IT equipment because of excessive humidity, temperature and other external conditions."

APC`s Environmental Monitoring Unit features include temperature and humidity monitoring, as well as contact monitoring, where four user-definable external inputs for fire, water, smoke, unauthorised entry, physical security, or any external condition can be measured via contact closure.

Says Kleynhans: "Interfaces are flexible - management can be done via the Web, Telnet, or SNMP interfaces. There are also two levels of user access, administrative and device management."

Another advantage is the quick configuration - the EMU functions on a network with three simple settings: the IP address of the device, Subnet Mask, and IP address of the default Gateway. It only needs to be configured once.

"APC offers a professional Monitoring Service that will remotely monitor the EMU, uninterruptible power supplies, and other site information 24 x 7. This gives system managers the ability to focus their resources on other critical areas of the business," comments Kleynhans.
