A mobile app, designed to help learners prepare for tests, has been launched by Lucky Mobile.

Digital specialist, entrepreneur and MD of Lucky Mobile, Laurence Seberini, says StudyApps allows learners to take tests to improve their ability to retain knowledge.

"The technique is based on good science," says Seberini. "As reported in The New York Times, research shows that students who integrate testing into their studying retain about 50% more information a week later, compared with students using two other methods."

The app allows users to take tests on their tablet, covering a wide range of content. "It is not in stores at the moment, because we are working directly with the schools. The schools register with us and license the app, and we give them access to the Web site. They can either create their own content or they can use our content," explains Seberini.

StudyApps currently has mostly primary school English, Afrikaans, Maths and Science content, as well as other content such as Anatomy for university students, or the K53 content for learner drivers. Seberini says the company is now working on expanding the content to cover the whole school syllabus.

The app is available for iPad, as well as Android devices. Aside from interactive pictures, StudyApps also uses PDF documents and YouTube videos.

"Schools license it for R5 000 a month, but if they have a very small amount of students, we do discount it," says Seberini.

When rolled out to the public, a user will pay a subscription of around R50 a month, giving them access to all the content on the Web site.

Seberini says public rollout is expected to take place in about three months' time.
