Apple has upgraded its gaming experience on the iPhone with the release of the 4.0 firmware to include social , states Tech Radar.

The new Game Centre will allow users to invite friends to games right from their phone, as well as 'match-make' them with others when they have nobody to play with.

The iPhone Game Centre will use achievements, much like those on the Xbox and PlayStation platforms, as well as global leaderboards to help users track their high scores with other players by default.

Gaming consoles 'under threat'

Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, says video games of the future will not be confined to consoles, writes The Telegraph.

Kojima says games would eventually run on networks and be platform-agnostic, enabling gamers to continue playing on the move.

"In the near future, we'll have games that don't depend on any platform," he points out. "Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel - wherever they are and whenever they want to play.”

Tiga calls for games tax relief

The Industry Gaming Association (Tiga) has called for games tax relief to be introduced as soon as possible to help the UK development sector keep pace with that of Canada and other nations, reports Gaming Industry News.

Richard Wilson, CEO of Tiga, has suggested that an "unfavourable tax regime" has held Britain's games industry back for some time, allowing other countries to capitalise.

This comes after it was reported the Canadian development sector has overtaken the UK to become the third-largest employer of gaming professionals after the US and Japan.
