Apple to reveal iPhone 5

Johannesburg, 12 Sep 2012

Apple will today take the wraps off a new product - widely expected to be the iPhone 5.

The notoriously secretive company last week sent out invitations for an event in San Francisco. The invitation included a large number “12” casting a shadow in the shape of the number five - all but confirming the arrival of the iPhone 5.

While the event will be closed and only for a select audience, various live blogs will be available online from which to follow the announcement. Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to take the stage at 10am Pacific Time (about 7pm in SA).

Engadget will broad live from outside the event and will also run a live blog. GigaOM and Time.com will also blog live throughout the announcement.

Pressure's on

Apple has a lot riding on the success of the iPhone 5, and the iPhone business accounts for more than half of the company's revenue.

Analyst at Canaccord Genuity, Michael Walkley, says consumers are holding off on purchasing iPhones as they await the latest announcement from Apple. “However, our checks indicated strong consumer interest and likely demand for the iPhone 5, and we believe Apple will return to strong number one smartphone share in the US post the iPhone 5 launch."
