AppManager chosen by BBC for Internet e-mail system

Johannesburg, 11 May 1999

NetIQ`s AppManager has been implemented by the BBC for its new Internet e-mail system. The 20 000 regular user e-mail service additionally attracts thousands of messages per hour when e-mail addresses are displayed on prime-time TV. The BBC`s Internet e-mail averages 30 000 messages per day, with programmes such as "Points of View" creating e-mail surges that multiply the figure tenfold.

Effective performance and central management of the BBC`s Microsoft NT Exchange servers have brought substantial time benefits for the BBC. Via the broadcaster`s e-mail management department, the corporation`s Messaging Services Group (MSG), fault detection in the e-mail system is now rapid using AppManager.

The new Internet e-mail system forms part of the 70 million stg Internal Digital Infrastructure (IDI) project, whose objectives include improving the whole BBC network server structure (moving from Novell to Windows NT), standardising on one desktop operating system (Windows 95) and one e-mail system (MicrosoftExchange/Outlook). Of the 180 Windows NT servers set to replace the 900 legacy servers, 50 are now up and running, serving around 7 500 users. The Exchange network is being added to at a rate of up to 200 users a day at distributed sites across the UK.

Peter Chase, the BBC`s e-mail project director, says: "The BBC is a pioneer in terms of digital broadcasting and has therefore made a large investment in building a suitable IT infrastructure for the corporation. Digital broadcasting and business systems technology are rapidly converging."

Mark Harford, corporate messaging specialist at MSG, who evaluated NT performance management products, says: "We did an initial paper evaluation covering 40-50 points in detail. Having eliminated competitive products early on we settled on NetIQ`s AppManager. We`ve been very pleased with the implementation of AppManager. As a suite of products it manages not just NT and Exchange, but CIM, our SQL database and more. That flexibility and expandability means that we can scale up our performance management capability as we need to."

AppManager is an integrated product set that provides the industry`s most comprehensive solution for centrally monitoring the performance and availability of distributed Windows NT-based systems and server applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and Lotus Domino. AppManager optimises performance, ensures availability through automated problem detection and correction, and reduces support costs associated with managing and monitoring distributed Windows NT-based systems and applications. NetIQ`s customers in the financial marketplace include Lloyds, Credit Suisse, NatWest Bank and Woolwich Building Society. NetIQ products are distributed in South Africa by Server Tools.
