Architectural failure is common and the symptoms and typical causes of such failures are explored by the talk, given by Dr Fritz Solms, CEO of Solms TCD.
The presentation emphasises the importance of solid architectural process to ensure that enterprises have a suitable infrastructure within which they can deploy their business processes and effectively realise their vision and mission.
The first presentation took place on 17 August 2010 at Rand Merchant Bank in Sandton. The "Architecture from First Principles" presentation was organised by the Architecture Forum of the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE). Attendance was overwhelming, with the event fully booked within a short period. A repeat presentation, which is hosted by ABSA, in Randburg, has been scheduled for 6pm on 8 September 2010. Those who are interested can register at http://jcse.org.za/events/architecture-from-first-principles.
The benefits of separating architecture design from process design are highlighted and common strategies and architectural patterns employed to realise quality of service are discussed in some detail. The strategies discussed are not only limited to technical architecture, but they can also be applied for enterprise architecture as well.
It looks at known architectures such as model-driven architecture (MDA), services-oriented architecture (SOA), TOGAF and more; it gives an overview on the advantages of these architectures and their shortcomings. The use of the platform independent model resulting from a design methodology, such as use-case responsibility driven analysis and design (URDAD) can ensure that the business process is independent of architecture.
Finally, the talk discusses the benefits of using proven reference architecture such as Java EE in order to reduce architecture risk and the effort to put an appropriate architecture.
