Artec merges with SA Communication Services, launches Communications Consulting division

Johannesburg, 02 Feb 2005

Artec Computer Systems is growing its portfolio of offerings following a merger between itself and SA Communication Services. The combined entity will retain the Artec name, but the company has added an extra division - Artec Communications Consulting - and expanded its capabilities.

According to managing director, Patrick Maddox, the introduction of amendments to the Telecommunications Act, which is expected to allow 'break-out` voice over Internet Protocol traffic to be carried on public networks, will accelerate the convergence of data and telephony networking technologies.

"For some time telephony has effectively been becoming an integral part of computer systems and their networks. As such, Artec has made this strategic merger which equips it to address customer needs across broader technical disciplines as the converged network becomes a reality," he says.

Former MD of SA Communication Services, Rob Cooper-Bell, joins Artec as the head of the Communications Consulting division, and will focus on identifying new areas for cost reductions within client environments.

"Having worked with Artec on several joint projects, we agreed that the combination of its strengths in Microsoft infrastructure and networking would be ideally complemented with our telecommunications abilities. Particularly with the expected legalisation of VOIP breakout, Artec is now equipped to advise and implement appropriate solutions for our clients," says Cooper-Bell.

"With the new legislation, a wealth of new opportunities will open to Artec and its clients. However, expert knowledge is necessary to allow companies to take advantage of available solutions and technologies - and that is where the new division will add value," he adds.

Maddox notes that with the introduction of the amended Telecommunications Act, the technology industry is again entering a hype phase, similar to what occurred at the time of the Y2K panic. "We`re taking the cautious approach; technology investments should as always be made with the necessary due diligence and with proven returns. VOIP is no different; with our expanded capability, it will be our mission to raise awareness among corporates, and guide them in selecting technologies that work for them," he says.

Artec, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, provides products and services centred on organisations` technical infrastructure design, maintenance and support.
