Ascential Software has expanded its leadership of the worldwide enterprise data integration market with the introduction of MetaRecon, a data profiling and analysis solution.
MetaRecon reduces laborious data classification and coding required before the launch of critical enterprise applications, such as customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence (BI) data warehousing, e-business and supply chain management (SCM).
Data profiling is a necessary step in deciphering data from disparate information systems and mapping it into a common format for re-use in new applications.
MetaRecon includes a direct interface to DataStage, Ascential`s enterprise data integration platform deployed by more than 1 800 customers worldwide, including dozens in South Africa.
"MetaRecon marks another milestone for Ascential," says Julian Field, GM of Ascential Software South Africa. "We are now the only vendor to span the entire range of data profiling, data cleansing, complete metadata management and data integration, all in a single, fully integrated product suite."
MetaRecon is offered as a standalone product or as a bundle with DataStage and Ascential`s data quality management solution, Integrity. MetaRecon and associated technology was acquired in a $4,6 million technology purchase from MetaGenix Inc of Durham, North Carolina, which gives Ascential exclusive ownership of all technology and intellectual property related to MetaRecon.
MetaRecon automates the labour-intensive process of deciphering the content and meaning of Terabytes of data from disparate information systems - an important first step in integrating data for enterprise applications. Through automation, the product can reduce an IT department`s typical six-to-nine-month manual data profiling task to weeks or days - a saving of 90% or more. This, in turn, can slash the overall implementation time for an enterprise data integration project. Data integration provides a foundation for successfully deploying large-scale enterprise applications.
MetaRecon enables more complete data profiling than manual procedures. "This ensures that a company is using more accurate, relevant data," notes Field, "rather than putting bad data into a system or application. Garbage in always translates to garbage out."
"Data profiling tools are the latest catalyst for enterprise application deployments," says Doug Laney, META Group VP, Application Delivery Strategies. "Data profiling provides enterprises with tremendous insight into the state of their data before they begin a data integration or data quality process. This can dramatically reduce time and effort and increase the chance of a successful project."
