AST Enterprise Solutions Management (ESM), a business unit of the AST Group, has successfully implemented Quest Software`s LiveReorg for Mondi Paper to assist the company in reorganising its growing 550GB databases, which is also mirrored for testing and development purposes, without the need to go offline or buy more disk space.
Based in Durban, Mondi Paper is a major player in the local economy, and a key supplier to thousands of South African businesses. As part of the global Anglo American plc group, it manufactures some 520 000 tonnes of paper from local resources and imports speciality grades.
With a large customer-base and the imperative for a fast turnover/low-inventory of manufactured product, Mondi Paper relies heavily on IT to keep costs low and customer satisfaction high. "This is why we needed a solution that reduced our storage needs but did not affect performance," explains Edouard Montocchio, IT Manager for Mondi Paper.
Quest`s LiveReorg is the only software solution, which could provide Mondi users with the ability to perform non-intrusive, downtime-free maintenance of their Oracle database while maintaining optimum system performance and preventing wasteful disk utilisation.
Before buying LiveReorg, AST ESM performed a real-life demonstration on three of Mondi`s database systems, which were to be reorganised while the users were still accessing their applications. Within a short space of time, the tables had been completely re-built and defragmented, saving an immediate 30Gb of storage space. "And the only change our users` noticed was that database queries to those tables ran about 10% faster," adds Montocchio. "Of course, saving 30Gb on the active database also saved 30Gb on the mirrored files."
