ATEC acquires Letlhaka Technologies

Johannesburg, 19 Jul 2011

ATEC Systems and Technologies (www.atec.co.za) today announced it has acquired Letlhaka Technologies (www.letlhaka.co.za) and has retained key staff, agencies as well as all intellectual property. Letlhaka Technologies is now trading as a division of ATEC Systems & Technologies.

ATEC, an established last mile FTTH service provider, was recently mentioned in the press for announcing the launch of a full synchronous 10Mbps fibre-based Internet service for its clients at Kindlewood Estate in KZN.

There are also plans to link all its clients to high-capacity 100Mbps and 1Gbps fibre connections to allow for IPTV and VOD services.

Letlhaka Technologies was founded in 2006, with the aim of being a turnkey last mile FTTx access network technology provider in southern Africa. Since then, the company has built up a wealth of knowledge and intellectual property, while aligning itself with world-class vendors of access network and FTTH equipment, such as Alloptic-CTDI (GEPON), Tilgin (CPE Devices), Edge-Core (Field Hardened Fibre-Based Metro Ethernet Switches configured for Triple Play Services), Endean (Firewalls) and Epygi (IP PABXes).

The popular Edge-Core triple play point-to-point FTTH solution, which arguably serves the most FTTH clients in the country, is still available to other FTTH integrators and resellers. Additionally, this platform will now be supported by the ATEC helpdesk and nationwide support infrastructure.

Both companies were involved with the roll-out of over 30 South African FTTx access networks providing triple play solutions in residential estates, retirement villages, luxury apartment buildings, office parks and even two hotels for service providers and private operators, one of which is ATEC.

Riaan Janse van Rensburg, previously with Letlhaka and now CTO at ATEC, says after five years of developing and providing technology solutions to service providers, it is exciting to be in the front line of deploying full turnkey solutions and being involved in service provision with an operator such as ATEC, which has a good industry reputation for offering excellent customer service.

Frans Verwoerd, MD of ATEC, said the merging of the operational experience of ATEC as a turnkey systems integrator and service provider, with the technical expertise and product range Letlhaka, provides it and its clients with a significant value proposition as it continues to roll out privately owned, open access networks to niche markets. More and more its offering will move from basic high-speed Internet and cost-effective telephony to the provision of entertainment-related content such as subscription-based international IPTV channels, video on-demand services, as well as the deployment of the recently launched MultiChoice DVB over IP service.

In addition to FTTH technology, ATEC supplies much-needed network technology and design services to IP-based surveillance and access control system integrators. Many IP-based surveillance systems have been plagued with problems due to the lack of experienced network engineers and correctly specified equipment for the deployment of video, voice and data (triple play) networks supporting the unique demands of high-end surveillance systems.

As an FTTH Council Africa member, ATEC and its Letlhaka division will not only continue to develop technology solutions and supply other service providers in the FTTH industry with equipment, technology and support, but will, together with other players in the industry, also use its experience and expertise to assist the FTTH Council Africa and its members to develop and promulgate generic FTTH deployment specifications and best practices. This will ensure that a minimum set of industry standards are created and adhered to.
