Atlas 10K II drive provides outstanding performance

Johannesburg, 12 Oct 2000

Quantum Corporation`s Atlas 10K II 10,000 RPM high-end disk drive has been chosen by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) as the sole disk drive for its high definition (HDTV) video server used in the production of the first full-length feature film shot in HDTV format. ILM is the leading effects facility in the world, serving the motion picture, commercial production and attraction industries, creating visual effects for over 120 feature films, including The Perfect Storm, Star Wars: Episode I, Saving Private Ryan, Small Soldiers, Deep Impact, Men In Black, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Twister, Mission: Impossible, Dragonheart, Jumanji, Casper, Forrest Gump, The Mask, Jurassic Park, Death Becomes Her, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? the Indiana Jones series and the Star Wars trilogy.

"ILM strives to offer only the absolute best in production quality," said Gary Meyer, chief engineer of video engineering for ILM. "Every advantage in this competitive market is critical to our ongoing success. Quantum was able to deliver performance and reliability that was timely and cost effective - essential to this leading-edge application."

ILM required the performance needed for easy integration with its in-house developed and hardware for the capture, edit and playing in real-time of 24 frames per second high resolution HDTV content. Functionality that emulates industry standard video tape recorder mechanisms for forward and reverse play without dropped frames was also imperative. Quantum collaborated with Chaparral Storage, Inc., a leading RAID controller supplier, and StoreCase Technology, a recognized storage enclosure provider, to assemble and deliver a system that would meet ILM`s requirements for performance, reliability, flexible configuration and ruggedness.

"Quantum`s storage solutions are making a tremendous impact in the explosive content market," said Pat McGarrah, director of strategic and technical marketing for Quantum. "The Atlas family of products shine in an environment where performance and reliability are essential. We are thrilled that ILM has selected Quantum for its demanding storage needs."

"The Atlas family of hard disk drives is design-optimized for A/V and multimedia applications. The drives offer performance enhancements, interruption-free sequential data transfers, and eliminate most causes for dropped frames. Up to 22 minutes of uncompressed broadcast quality video can be stored on an Atlas 36.4GB capacity drive, and the Atlas Ultra 160 SCSI interface doubles peak I/O bandwidth when used with an Ultra 160 controller as compared to the Ultra 2 SCSI interface," says Pierre Brunswick, Quantum Regional Sales Director, Eastern Europe and M.E.A. "Furthermore, Atlas drives are RAID-ready for demanding online video systems."

Quantum is the first company to offer a complete line of storage technology products for the digital video market. Its solutions include a diverse product range from hard disk drives to solid state disks and tape drives that meet the high performance and reliability requirements for today`s digital audio and video applications.
