Attachmate boosts productivity for Sara Lee

Johannesburg, 05 Aug 1998

Household and personal care consumable goods manufacturer, Sara Lee DE - part of the Dough Egbert and Avroy Schlain Group, has reduced time-to-market and improved information access with Attachmate`s Extra! Personal Client (E!PC).

Tony Brennan, IT manager of Sara Lee DE, describes some of the problems faced in the Pine Town-based company`s business: "Most of our products have a short life cycle and we are continuously researching, developing and manufacturing new ones.

"In such an environment time-to-market is critical and a solution was needed which would reduce the time spent working on our large marketing databases and boost productivity."

Enter E!PC with its ability to deliver host information to any Windows desktop over any network from any source, public or private. Using technologies such as object linking and embedding it extends Web-like navigation to traditional host systems.

"E!PC assists in our efforts to get new products into the hands of consumers faster, keeping us ahead in a highly competitive market," comments Brennan.

From an information access perspective he says the Attachmate product has improved the efficiency of file transfer between PCs and the mainframe. "We needed a solution that would not only speed up the process but also provide access to our AS/400 system for users of variable skill."

Debbie Knight, account manager at Attachmate VAR, Unisys, says the product fitted the bill by offering access to information wherever it resides on Sara Lee DE`s systems. "E!PC has been instrumental in cutting overall IS costs and improving productivity at the factory in KwaZulu-Natal," she adds.

Litisha Richardson, corporate sales manager at Attachmate South Africa, says this is accomplished by reducing the complexity of accessing host-based information from the desktop. "Because the host-aware technology incorporated in E!PC manages the interaction with mainframe applications, end-user productivity is improved."
