Attix5-Internet Solutions partnership forces paradigm shift in the backup market

The Solution (IS), South Africa`s leading corporate leased line provider has selected Attix5, Stellenbosch-based development house, to provide the technology to power its latest corporate offering. IS Backup, powered by Attix5, is a remote backup and solution for corporate desktops and laptops. It enables companies to regain control of critical business , over 50% of which, according to Gartner Research Group, is at risk outside of traditional backup strategies.

Christo Venter, GM of IS Data Management says, "IS Backup will offer our customers a much needed value added service which leverages off their existing leased line provided by IS. Critical business data is backed up to a redundant storage system hosted by IS, using the leased line. It`s fully automated, encrypted and totally convenient to administer and use, thus reducing business risk, saving time and relieving the workload from already overburdened IT departments. " IS holds a 46% market share in leased line Internet access, against 8% for its nearest competitor (Source: BMI TechKnowledge Report ET / 906, October 1999.) The service will be launched in mid-February to Gauteng based clients, and in April to Cape Town and Durban clients. Attix5 has an office in Johannesburg at IS`s premises to assist with the installation of the technology and manage its support and ongoing development alongside IS Support and Operations Services.

Roy Davies, Attix5 director, says, "Companies understand that a reliable backup system is a business imperative but procedures to store data on central file servers are seldom if ever adhered to and the growing number of laptops presents a huge business risk. IS Backup eliminates this risk without requiring further expenditure on backup and storage hardware."

50 Global 2 500 companies interviewed by Forrester Research in 1999 each had an average of 15 terabytes (15 trillion bytes) of storage. They predicted that their storage needs would grow at nearly 52% annually driven by e-commerce, new applications, and data warehousing. Consequently, Forrester expects storage spending to rise from 4% in 1999 to 17% of computing system budgets in 2003. Venter says, "The IS Backup Solution offers clients backup technology combined with remote access to data, an authentication and file storage system which directs the backup, and an administrative tool which can be used to customize datasets, access privileges and backup windows. This administrative tool also allows the IT manager to remotely deploy and monitor the service."

"IS Backup, using proprietary technology from Attix5, deploys a Java client to intelligently collect and store data to central file servers within IS," says Ian van Reenen, Chief Technology Officer of Attix5. "Backups are automated and transparent and individual users can restore lost files from any point in time without requiring IT assistance. Data is encrypted before leaving the client device and remains so while stored remotely. Our JET technology provides fast efficient and totally secure data backup and recovery from across the office or across the globe."

"Java offers a secure and robust development platform for us, across multiple operating systems. As business critical data migrates onto a variety of mobile, thin devices Attix5 will continue to provide the technology to place that data back under corporate control."
