Australian grain giant chooses Agilisys to optimise wheat export

Johannesburg, 08 Mar 2004

AWB, Australia`s major national grain asset manager, has chosen the Agilisys Advanced Planning solution to optimise the Australian wheat export supply chain.

Agilisys is a leading provider of best-in-class, industry-specific supply chain solutions to serve industries including the food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, consumer packaged goods and biotechnology industries. The Agilisys solutions are distributed in SA by ApplyIT, the local IT specialist for the process manufacturing industry.

The Advanced Planning solution chosen by AWB will support it in performing "what-if" analyses and producing an optimal export plan. It will be implemented across the company and integrated with SAP.

"AWB`s wheat export supply chain is very process-oriented," says Keith McNeil, GM: supply chain strategy and optimisation at AWB. "The supply chain consists of 850 storage sites across Australia, and 18 export terminals from where the wheat is loaded into full vessels for delivery to customers. AWB is confronted with volume, quality and supply constraints directly related to the crop, the blending of multiple products to meet customer demands and the shipping of products in full vessel quantities."

The company markets wheat and other grains to more than 40 countries and is the world`s second largest wheat exporter with a 16% global market share. The national wheat pool, managed by AWB, is a significant contributor to the Australian economy, accounting for around 3% of the total value of Australia`s exports.

The Agilisys Advanced Planning solution will enable AWB to minimise costs by making trade-off decisions while increasing returns for Australian wheat growers.

"AWB is Australia`s largest agribusiness company," says Gavin Halse, ApplyIT MD. "By implementing Agilisys Advanced Planning throughout its supply chain, AWB will improve its ability to deal with all supply chain constraints and customer requirements, and be able to assess various scenarios with the associated costs and profits."
