Australian Postal Services (APS) has implemented a South African developed and designed asset tracking system to minimise theft and improve the time it takes for the delivery of speed parcels.
The Siltag Asset Tracking product was designed and developed by Evolving Management Systems, a company within the Kunene Services and Solutions (KSS) group.
The technology offers full mapping facilities as an aid to location finding.
The covert system is being piloted at the Brisbane Airport branch of the APS where 15 RF receivers have been installed in the 2000 square metre depot. Specific parcels are tagged giving authorities the ability to track the whereabouts of parcels in the postal depot.
"As parcels move along conveyor belts it can be determined if they are unlawfully removed," says Stuart Pickering, engineering manager at EMS. "The system is also designed to measure the effectiveness of postal procedures and where they can be improved."
An Australian security consulting company, International Security Consulting Services (ISCS) came across the Siltek Asset Tracking System via the World Wide Web.
Management came to South Africa to discuss a distribution agreement early in 1999 resulting in ISCS being appointed as the Australian distributors for the system.
