Avaya takes top spot in UK IP telephony market in fourth quarter of 2005

Johannesburg, 30 Mar 2006

Avaya, a leading global provider of communications applications, systems and services, has announced it has been named as the leader in the UK enterprise IP telephony market in the fourth quarter of 2005, according to a recent report by industry analyst firm Synergy Research Group*. In the three months from October to December, Avaya took nearly 27% market share, measured by ports shipped.

"Avaya completed a strong year in a competitive market for enterprise IP telephony," says Jeremy Duke, president and CEO of Synergy Research Group. He adds: "Given the magnitude of the IP telephony opportunity, a large number of competitors continue to aggressively compete for the hearts and minds of the enterprise customer. As the IP telephony market continues to heat up, Avaya provides a compelling value proposition for organisations seeking to migrate at a pace that suits their business need."

Buddie Ceronie, VP for Avaya in the UK, Ireland and Southern Africa comments: "We are delighted to have reached number one in the UK for IP telephony port shipments, complementing our global leadership position. We see increasing demand from our customers to benefit from IP telephony in a variety of ways, including as a hosted or managed service, and we expect this trend to continue."

IP telephony is software-based technology that uses voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) to transmit voice over a data network. Companies are adopting this rapidly expanding technology to help reduce costs and take advantage of advanced business communications applications that foster intelligent communications for improved business processes and enhance the efficiency of communications networks.

Avaya offers one of the industry`s most comprehensive portfolios of solutions for IP telephony - Avaya MultiVantage Communications Applications - with a flexible architecture that helps enable enterprises to design a communications roadmap that supports their business needs.

Supported by Avaya Global Services and a network of authorised Avaya BusinessPartners and DeveloperConnection technology partners, the portfolio brings together Avaya`s applications for telephony, contact centres and mobility, and features Avaya Communication Manager, the company`s flagship IP telephony software.

With the suite, businesses have access to a single portfolio of open standards-based applications that extends Avaya`s IP telephony software across enterprise operations and employee functions.

* The full Synergy Research Group report, entitled "Q4 2005 Enterprise VOIP EMEA Market Shares," covers the EMEA enterprise voice market, providing market share data for Enterprise VOIP Gateways and Enterprise Telephony - covering both IP and TDM telephony.
