AVeS simplifies hardware updates for IRCA Global

Johannesburg, 01 May 2014

When risk management solutions company, IRCA Global, required a technology partner to help it streamline its Microsoft environment, assist with a hardware migration strategy for its technology systems, as well as improve the general efficiency of its solutions, it turned to specialist ICT company, AVeS, for assistance.

Today, IRCA Global provides risk management solutions for customers in and around their safety, health, environment and quality control issues within their businesses. Due to the high-paced environment, the company relies extensively on its technology solutions as the backbone of the organisation.

It is with this that the company embarked on a project to improve the internal processes of its technology solutions and architecture, including its Microsoft environment. After a series of failed attempts, the company was eventually introduced to AVeS, a specialist provider of ICT infrastructure and security solutions.

"IRCA's need was clear. The company wanted to bolster its core business applications as well as streamline its use of the Microsoft application stack, while at the same time replace an ageing hardware stack," states Charl Ueckermann, Managing Director at AVeS. "The fact that this had not been done successfully to date was creating enormous frustration for the client, whose business productivity was now being significantly impacted as a result."

After an extensive business and technology audit at IRCA, AVeS provided the client with a properly-scoped hardware migration roadmap. The roadmap was built around a dual approach where both physical and virtual conversions would be run concurrently in order to avoid the potential complications associated with a full application rebuild.

The team then loaded the new platform with Microsoft's Hyper-V Server 2012. The data and applications from the existing server were also migrated from the old hardware to the new one. The flexibility of Hyper-V not only increased the resources assigned to the virtual server, but also helped achieve better-than-expected system speeds in the process.

According to Ueckermann, users at IRCA Global immediately noted the increase in the day-to-day functionality of its service platform, demonstrating a clear win for both the technology and the client. "With the inclusion of a solid virtual layer separating the application and hardware stack, we were able to effectively eliminate an often-complicated migration process associated with a hardware update," says Ueckermann.

"Resource allocation was easy to assign. The physical server still had resources available, which allowed for additional servers to be introduced with little expected hardware spend," states Ueckermann. "In short, the customer's experience was improved as a result of the activities of not only the technology, but also the dedication of the partner."
