Axiz ahead of the pack with lead-free manufacturing

Johannesburg, 05 Apr 2005

Leading IT infrastructure distributor Axiz has announced that it is in the process of moving its current memory manufacturing plant to a lead-free environment. This move towards the use of `non-toxic` products for its electronic equipment is a global trend but not yet common practice or ion regulation in SA.

"The transition to lead-free/RoHS-compliant components is an enormous undertaking and an important part of the supply chain. Axiz is environmentally responsible and has chosen to invest in a lead-free environment now even though it is not a prerequisite in SA," says Keith Anderson, executive general manager, Axiz. It is also another step towards becoming ISO 2000, 1800 and 1400 compliant.

According to Anderson, the problem facing manufacturers today is that there are small amounts of lead (Pb) and other harmful materials in many electronic components. As these products reach their end-of-life and are disposed, environmental and regulatory concerns rise due to the potential impact these materials may have on human health. "The lead-free initiative set up by Axiz is aimed at eliminating the use of these hazardous materials resulting in improved recycling, disposal and safety," says Anderson.

The impending lead-free legislation will present many manufactures with several process issues as companies start removing hazardous lead from their electronic packages.

"To keep up with the changing market demands of memory, Axiz will not only build its own lead-free manufacturing plant, but will also upgrade its components and processes - equating to a substantial investment," concludes Anderson.
