March 2006 marked the end of the first rotation of the Axiz ISETT SETA Learnership. The fully endorsed one year programme, which is supported by the IT sector`s training authority ISETT SETA, provides students with theoretical knowledge and invaluable practical working experience. A total of 50 learners, drawn from regions in South Africa, were identified for the 12-month programme. According to Keith Anderson, general manager at Axiz, the first rotation was very successful. This sentiment is echoed by the students who took part.
"I learnt several valuable lessons during the learnership, but top of the list is the importance of teamwork. The reason that Axiz is so successful is due to the fact that all the departments, managers and staff work together as a team. It`s not about being noticed; it`s about getting the job done and achieving the same goal," says Reginald Sibeko, student.
The power of the Axiz learnership is in the combination of its theory and practice. Sibeko said that while working at Axiz he got to see the theory of teamwork being put into practice: "Seeing it work made me realise that to be successful in business I need to be a team player. My mentor showed me what a good leader should be and that to be a good leader you need to respect yourself, and only then can you respect staff members and clients."
Fellow student, Khumo Tshoma, says the learnership gave her a valuable overview of the processes behind her allocated field of IT logistics: "I never realised how large the industry is and how many exciting career opportunities are available. What I learnt changed all my preconceived ideas that were fencing me in. My blinkers are off and my view on IT careers and opportunities has greatly expanded."
Students taking part in the learnership walk away with more than just experience and theoretical knowledge, however. At the end of the learnership, successful students receive a NQF Level 5 qualification known as the National Certificate in Information Technology: Systems Support Engineering.
"The students have fully embraced the learnership as an ideal way to fully understand the inner workings of the IT industry, acquiring a good understanding of its background, while obtaining sound business knowledge," comments Anderson. He says the programme includes designing networks, technical development and learning about leadership and marketing skills.
The second rotation of the Axiz ISETT SETA Learnership commences on 22 May and ends on 14 July. The students receive their training from IT Intellect and practical experience at Axiz`s office in Johannesburg. To qualify for the learnership programme, candidates had to be unemployed, between the ages of 18 and 25 and already held at least a NQF level four, N+ or A+ qualification.
