Axiz to set new standard with CMTL test procedures on memory modules

Johannesburg, 06 Jul 2005

Axiz, the leading IT infrastructure distributor, has scored another first in SA with the inclusion of CMTL testing procedures for its locally produced memory modules. Established as the industry standard for memory module and motherboard compatibility testing, CMTL is the leading independent compatibility test lab in the industry.

Keith Anderson, Axiz executive general manager, says: "Axiz is a good corporate citizen as well as a company that is committed to the Five Capitals Model for sustainable development. In addition, we also like to benchmark ourselves against international best practice standards to ensure we constantly progress. Part of this process was the decision to provide further investment in our testing procedures to improve the quality of modules manufactured locally at our memory plant located in Midrand."

The rapid progression of technology, coupled with the increase in frequency and speed of bandwidth, has resulted in a need for enhanced integrity checking. By utilising these new procedures, Axiz can emulate what the memory module is subjected to in the live environment and ensure that when it is delivered to a customer, an international industry standard quality control process has been applied to the module.

Previously a 100% boot up test, the new Axiz testing procedure will now include a burn in test using CMTL equipment. The use of the CMTL testing procedure in memory and motherboards assures users enhanced compatibility, reliability and quality.

"Memory is one of the most notoriously difficult system functions to troubleshoot. The new testing has proved to be very effective. It can trap errors that the normal boot up process cannot. The burn-in tests simulate a Window/Linux/Unix environment with consistent load being placed on memory modules," says Anderson.

Once the modules have been built they are placed through a two-phase testing process to ensure the product works flawlessly. These tests take longer than normal boot up testing; however, Anderson says Axiz has invested in multiple platforms to minimise the runtime to an effective one minute per module. The first testing phase is an operability and programming process that checks the functional integrity of the memory module and then programs the module to the DRAM manufacturer`s specification. The second phase is more intense and verifies the integrity of the memory module running in a simulated operating system environment.

Implemented in May 2005, thousands of modules have already been through the new and vigorous testing procedure. "Any product that is associated with, or carries the Axiz brand has to be synonymous with quality and be `eco-efficient`," concludes Anderson.
