Beacon Sweets and Chocolates, a Tiger Brands subsidiary, has commissioned DNS Networking (KwaZulu-Natal), a Dimension Data Group subsidiary, to devise and implement a data backup and protection strategy for its nation-wide operation.
Beacon Sweets is South Africa`s leading confectionery manufacturer, and distributes to markets locally, as well as internationally.
In the first phase of the project DNS, in association with Compaq, has installed an automated backup solution at Beacon Sweets` Jacobs plant and head office in Durban. This pilot project is expected to be expanded to include distribution branches in South Africa.
According to Sharon Whitcomb, Facilities Manager at Beacon Sweets, the system backs up data from Novell NetWare and NT servers, and will eventually include the company`s Unix payroll server.
Central to the solution is a Compaq tape library system, currently operating at a capacity of 700 Gigabytes native capacity, but scalable to 6.3 Terabytes.
"At present the system backs up data on the Jacobs local area network, but is capable of managing the backup needs of our wide area network," says Whitcomb.
"We view our data as a vital asset, and will, in conjunction with DNS, develop a strategy to ensure efficient backup and recovery " she says.
