Baltimore, KPMG announce security partnership

Johannesburg, 01 Feb 1999

Baltimore, the global specialist in public key infrastructure (PKI) systems and information security solutions, has announced a strategic agreement with KPMG Trusted Third Party (TTP) Services to promote and deliver information security solutions for clients in the growing electronic commerce market.

Under this agreement, KPMG consultants will assist clients in preparing for, and implementing Baltimore`s range of e-commerce security products and services, providing an enhanced solution for all parties. KPMG TTP Services will combine its strategic project management skills, industry and technical knowledge of the TTP environment with Baltimore`s comprehensive PKI technology for e-commerce and enterprise security.

"Baltimore is recognised as a leader in the provision of PKI systems which have become the backbone of secure electronic commerce and enterprise security. Our agreement enables us to offer clients solutions to help maximise the capabilities of their business in the rapidly growing e-commerce environment," says Andre Biesheuvel, partner KPMG TTP Services.

KPMG TTP consultants assist clients to prepare for and build business solutions to exploit the enormous potential of e-commerce.

"The successful deployment of a PKI system does not solely rely on the best technology - it requires experienced project management and expert technical knowledge," says Matthew Bowcock, Executive Director of Marketing at Baltimore.

Market analysts Intelliquest predict the market for internet e-commerce will grow exponentially to $1 200bn by 2002 and this agreement puts Baltimore and KPMG TTP Services in a strong position to meet expected market demands.

PKI systems use cryptographic technology to produce digital signatures and ensure confidentiality and authentication of information sent over the Internet. A Certification Authority issues a digital certificate (or electronic ID) which binds the user to their public key (a mathematical algorithm which scrambles electronic information when applied in order to keep it confidential) and the end result becomes the user`s digital signature.

Because Baltimore`s range of PKI products is highly scalable, KPMG consultants can provide business packages supported by strong and reliable public key security solutions throughout organisations of all sizes.

Baltimore products are distributed in South Africa by Usko Communications. Baltimore is the company arising from the recent merger of Baltimore and Zergo.
