data and digital archives, according to IBM, reports InformationWeek.
The tech giant introduced a range of storage products, including its first tape library system that provides 2.7 exabytes of storage.
The IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library supports a 4TB tape cartridge called the TS1140. It includes new IBM shuttle technology that connects multiple tape libraries to create a single, high-capacity library complex, which can manage four times the capacity of its previous generation model.
The usefulness of tape storage to backup data was made evident earlier this year, when Google revealed a small number of Gmail users were unable to access their e-mail messages due to a software glitch.
While the e-mail data was wiped out, Google engineers were able to retrieve the data from backup tape storage.
According to CBR Online, the System Storage TS1140 Tape Drive holds two million times more data than IBM's first tape drive.
It also employs fewer and efficient components, enabling it to use up to 64% less energy.
Channel Register says IBM has poured a lot of investment into its physical and virtual tape products and is emphasising that it outperforms its Oracle competition.
IBM is also positioning the tape library as a natural destination for archival data with policies to automatically move data to this archive tier of storage and thus integrate it with disk storage tiers.
