Lenovo and IBM have announced a worldwide battery recall that may affect South African customers, warns Lenovo SA.
"[Local] customers need to make sure they are not affected by the worldwide recall of the Sony lithium-ion batteries," says Kgabo Maila, Lenovo SA communication and marketing manager.
"We have no idea how many batteries have been affected in SA as yet, but we know that 5% to 10% of the worldwide batch sold between February 2005 and September 2006 has been affected," says Maila.
Lenovo bought the IBM PC division in November 2004. All maintenance and support is still done by IBM.
"There is a tool on the Web site that enables anybody who is operating a ThinkPad to check whether their batteries are affected. Simply go to the Web site, and follow the link to the battery recall story. The whole process should take a minute," explains Maila.
Fire hazard
Lenovo has issued a worldwide press release confirming these batteries can over-heat, posing a potential fire hazard. The recalled batteries were sold with, or separately, to ThinkPad notebook PC models below:
*T Series (T43, T43p, T60)
*X Series (X60, X60s):
*R Series (R51e, R52, R60, R60e)
Additionally, since these batteries work with any T4x Series or R5x Series system, customers who ordered an extra battery or received a replacement battery for those models between February 2005 and September 2006 must check their batteries.
Lenovo will offer customers replacement batteries for all recalled batteries free of charge.
