BEA Systems acquires telco infrastructure software provider

Johannesburg, 07 Jan 2005

BEA Solutions Africa, the distributor of BEA products in Southern Africa, has announced that BEA Systems Inc has acquired Incomit, a privately held Swedish company that provides infrastructure software for the telecommunications industry.

The acquisition of Incomit, BEA`s fifth in the past two years, is designed to enhance BEA`s substantial leadership in the telco industry by providing key technologies to augment the BEA WebLogic Service Delivery Platform, BEA`s telecommunications solution framework. BEA has been a leader in software for the global telecommunications industry for a considerable time, and all of the Global 50 telco operators run portions of their OSS (Operational Support Systems) business on BEA infrastructure. With BEA WebLogic Service Delivery Platform, the company is now responding to telco customers` demands for broader product offerings that will enable them to create, deliver and manage new converged services for next-generation telco networks.

"BEA`s acquisition of Incomit is part of our strategy of helping our telco customers successfully transform their businesses to meet the new demands of the industry," said Olivier Helleboid, executive vice president, corporate strategy and development, BEA Systems. "The telco industry is at several crucial transition points brought on by mergers and acquisitions, increasing competitive pressure, and decreasing voice revenues. To succeed, carriers are transforming their business models to become providers of a variety of data services such as email, calendaring, games, and a wide variety of digital content. The addition of Incomit`s technology is important to helping expand the BEA WebLogic Service Delivery Platform and to help give our customers a competitive edge in the emerging telco marketplace."

"This is exciting news for us in South Africa," commented Malcolm Freeman, principal architect with BEA Solutions Africa. "We have a strong presence in the telco industry in this country, and these new developments will enable our customers to derive additional value from their existing BEA infrastructure."

BEA has been a leader in telecommunications software since the company`s founding 10 years ago. In 2004, more than 24 percent of BEA`s revenues were derived from telecommunications customers. BEA`s first telco product - Tuxedo -was originally developed at Bell Labs, and is still the foundation of many operators` operational and billing systems.
