Scammers have taken to social media to advertise a fake bursary notice for the Department of Basic Education's Funza Lushaka Programme.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says the notice regarding applications for the Funza Lushaka Programme, which is doing the rounds on social media, is a hoax.

The notice reads: "Department of Education is looking for 4 761 Matriculants to be trained as Teachers. Application link>> http://goo.gl/nGTeY4 > http://goo.gl/nGTeY4

In a statement, the DBE distanced itself from the notice and says the message is fake.

"All official communication surrounding the Funza Lushaka Programme and its bursary opportunities will be communicated directly by the Department of Basic Education through its official channels, including the DBE and Funza Lushaka Web site (www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za)," says the department.

"Candidates and those wishing to apply for teaching bursaries through the programme are urged to be vigilant for such hoax messages and application invitations."
