BlackBerry BBX handset possibly leaked

Johannesburg, 15 Nov 2011

A picture of what could be the first BlackBerry BBX device is doing the rounds online.

Posted by The Verge, the phone in the photograph is said to be called the “BlackBerry London”. The all-touch design bears some resemblance to the recently unveiled Porsche Design P9981.

According to The Verge, the phone appears to be running a variation of the PlayBook's OS.

“Our source says the phone shown was a 'dummy' model, so it's likely the screen is nothing more than a static image,” notes The Verge.

“Even though we did multiple passes on this image for Photoshop and/or rendering artefacts, this could ultimately be someone's hilarious idea of a joke.

“It's also possible that this is a prototype or concept design, and won't make its way to production. Still, given the detail in the image and some of the information we were given to back it up, we believe there's truth to this story.”

Research In Motion (RIM) was originally expected to release the BlackBerry Colt as its first BBX handset, but the Colt has reportedly been scrapped in favour of the London.

The London, if it exists, is rumoured to be scheduled for release in June next year.

BBX is said to be RIM's last ditch attempt to remain relevant in the smartphone space. The new OS is a combination of the QNX OS of the PlayBook and the BlackBerry OS currently running on the company's handsets.

RIM has, however, been tight-lipped over the details of the imminent BBX launch, and is yet to make any formal statements regarding new product launches.
