BMC completes Application-Centric Storage Management initiative

Johannesburg, 11 May 2001

BMC has released its "intelligent" storage management solution, the Patrol Application Storage Resource Manager (ASRM).

The offering is aimed at simplifying storage on disparate resources.

Market research shows that the average company`s storage requirements double every year, making storage one of the most critical growth areas of IT today.

Wayne Naya, BMC Software`s storage product marketing manager for the UK, Middle East and Africa region, points out that the storage infrastructure has also become increasingly difficult to .

ASRM is aimed at simplifying storage through focusing on management and is the final component of BMC`s Application-Centric Storage Management (ACSM) initiative.

ACSM is endorsed through partnerships with Brocade, Cisco Systems, Compaq, McData, Sun Microsystems and Veritas Software. It allows for management of disparate storage resources, enabling customers to map, manage and optimise their storage resources.

Available locally through distributor MGX, this "intelligent" management of storage allows for one-console control of the entire storage infrastructure. It optimises application availability, performance and recoverability by focusing on the application itself to direct storage policies and procedures. Any application identified as critical to a company`s performance can be prioritised and monitored throughout the chain to determine whether any events are impacting on its performance.

Naya says the data storage market is predicted to exceed $160 billion within five years. However, many companies still manage storage "on the fly".

Data is growing at the fastest rates ever, and Naya estimates that the average company`s storage needs increase by at least 50% per year.

"Planning storage upgrades and determining the impact this will have on existing infrastructure ultimately puts strain on management resources. The storage infrastructure has also become increasingly difficult to manage. ACSM is not just about storage, but is focused on service management."

Naya says the ACSM has sparked intense interest in the market. "Our channel and systems partners see it as a step beyond their traditional storage."

He points out that the ASRM is the latest in a series of phased storage releases by BMC. "Because the system is modular, companies can implement just the knowledge modules at the bottom end of the stack if they choose to do so. This means our target market can go beyond our current customers - the major corporations, banks and telcos - to include SMEs."

Naya says BMC also expects to be able to offer automated costing of the entire storage chain by the end of this year, to help customers determine the exact costs of their data storage and transfer.
