BMC, EMC team up on virtual tape technology

Johannesburg, 15 Feb 2001

BMC and EMC, the world leader in information storage, have announced a technology alliance to develop a virtual tape solution for S/390 environments. BMC`s new Virtual Tape and Management Solution (VTMS) will give customers the ability to "virtualise" tape, or seamlessly switch to disk and operate as if they are still using tape.

Based on EMC`s CopyCross tape redirect technology and BMC`s Control-T tape management system, VTMS will give customers significant performance improvements, increased manageability, and reduce operational complexity while enabling instant through their EMC information infrastructure. The solution will be sold and serviced by BMC and its representatives; in South Africa, this means it will be sold and serviced by Master Distributor CCH Enterprise Solutions.

The agreement extends CCH Enterprise Solutions` storage strategy and its ability to provide comprehensive storage solutions to its clients.

BMC`s VTMS will:

  • Supply a central point of control for enterprise-wide media and backup management.

  • Minimise operational overhead and reduce risk associated with tape management.

  • Leverage and extend the advanced features of EMC`s Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software to all enterprise data.

  • Achieve a vertical leap in performance of BMC`s DB2 and IMS Recovery Management and Database solutions to provide faster recovery. * Improve enterprise data availability and disaster recovery capabilities that enhance business continuity.

  • Reduce or eliminate the total cost of ownership for tape storage.

  • Manage the migration of virtual tape volumes to and from physical tape.

  • Use the advanced features of EMC TimeFinder software to create multiple copies of data, to and from remote sites using EMC`s Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software.

"Backup to tape remains a critical part of corporate IT, and its efficient management can mean the difference between a smooth functioning environment and chaos," says Reg Swart, BMC product and operations manager at CCH Enterprise Solutions. "This new solution boosts tape manageability via seamless integration across tape management systems, recovery management solutions and storage management systems."
