Telkom has issued a public warning following the circulation of a false advertisement involving the operator, through various electronic channels.
The advertisement claims the company is looking to hire call centre agents and calls on people to apply.
The bogus advertisement is being distributed through SMS, e-mail, social media and instant messaging channels such as WhatsApp and BlackBerry Messenger.
Thami Msubo, chief of human resources at Telkom, says the public needs to be "extremely vigilant" to avoid becoming victims of fraudsters.
"This advert is not an official Telkom advert and the company is not looking to hire call centre agents at this time." All Telkom employment advertisements are posted on the company's Web site.
"Should the public be suspicious about anything, they can call the Telkom fraud hotline on 0860 124 000 or their nearest police station to report their suspicions."
