The agremeent makes Boston the first education centre in South Africa to offer internationally accredited Magic tuition. Magic is distributed in South Africa by Magic SA, a division of MGX Holdings company Exsol.
Boston was the first official Unisa franchise, and has since grown to become the second largest private tertiary education institution in South Africa. It maintains close ties with Unisa, offering the university`s degree courses as part of its curriculum.
Doug van Vliet, Magic SA GM, says the deal gives Boston`s diploma students free access to Magic 8, the latest version of the industrial-strength RADD toolset, including all supporting material from Magic University in Israel. Students enrolled in the advanced course also receive a credit to write the Magic certification exam at any Sylvan training centre in the world, a R600 value.
"It`s a win-win situation," says Van Vliet. "For Boston, it means free access to Magic resources and an attractive incentive for its IT students, and for us it means exposure for Magic at grassroots level."
The deal is part of Magic SA`s strategy to market and grow Magic expertise in South Africa, and forms part of the worldwide strategy adopted by Magic University to promote Magic education of the highest quality in the market.
"In July last year, we ran into problems teaching Magic as part of our diploma course, due primarily to lack of skills," says Boston IT HOD Brandon Haberfeld. "We approached Magic SA and were delighted with their professional response to our problem."
Magic SA consultant Suzanne Odendaal offered to take over the teaching of Magic at Boston`s Johannesburg campus, and has since been contracted to manage the course from early next year.
"Suzanne brings with her the skills and experience of advanced Magic development," says Haberfeld. "We`ve designed our course around her, and with the help of Magic SA, we have the facilities in place to offer our students the most complete Magic training environment available in South Africa."
The Boston City Campus Magic course is scheduled to commence in 1999.
