Boston Micromachines secures NASA contract

Photonics.com reports.

The company produces deformable mirrors (DM) based on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS).

According to Mass High Tech, under the Phase II contract, Cambridge-based Boston Micromachines will construct a 2048 actuator that can handle the harsh environments and correct what space telescope optics cannot.

The contract was awarded based on specific criteria including that it had technical merit, had positive results with its Phase I contract, and proved commercial potential.

“Boston Micromachines' MEMS DMs have enabled great performance and operation in high contrast imaging test beds. This new programme will demonstrate the ability of our devices to operate reliably in unstable environments similar to those in space,” The Boston Herald quotes company president and co-founder Paul Bierden as saying.

“We are pleased that NASA continues to value and support our mirror technology for its future missions in the study of Earth-like planets.”
