The Botswana Government Computer Bureau has implemented Greenwich Mean Time`s Check 2000 diagnostic and corrective software to prepare its PC based systems for the millennium rollover.
This was confirmed by the bureau`s computer manager Lash Motlhatlhedi who says the Botswana Government evaluated a number of systems before selecting Check 2000 as being "the most useful tool" for the immense project.
According to the web site of the International Y2K Cooperation Center (IY2KCC), www.iy2kcc.org, a United Nations backed group funded by the World Bank, the Botswana Government Services says that the problems associated with the Y2K date change are some of the most serious facing Botswana organisations and the global economy today.
This is according to President Festus Mogae in his President`s Year 2000 speech. He says that problems must not be under-estimated or viewed as just an IT problem.
"It is a much wider potential high risk issue, as it can affect your supply chain, customers, your control systems and therefore, the continuity of your organisation.
"The government, parastatals, banks and large companies in Botswana are already addressing the issue but we all need to do more to ensure the country is commercially fit for the next millennium. I urge you all to participate in the public awareness exercise and prepare yourself.
"We cannot afford to miss this deadline!"
