Brand name or White Box? The advantages of a locally assembled PC

Johannesburg, 07 Feb 2000

The computer market is hotly competed for by established brand names and less expensive, locally assembled "white boxes". Jason McMillan, business manager for Tarsus PC at Tarsus Technologies, sheds some light on the advantages associated with selecting a locally manufactured PC to address your business and personal needs.

"With `white box`, brands, there is always a division in reseller understanding as to where the clone fits into the market and where the branded machine fits in," begins McMillan.

"Clones are local brands that are essentially equal to the branded machines - in many respects, the inside of the machine may be identical to a branded machine, with an Intel motherboard and CPU, a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive and so on. The difference is that the clone is assembled and supported locally," explains McMillan.

What this means to the end-user is that a clone machine, such as the locally assembled Tarsus PC, can meet market requirements faster and can be customised according to customer specifications more easily.

"Resellers will often encourage the purchase of a more expensive branded machine - because of the high brand awareness associated with, for example, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard machines, the buyer is led to believe that they are getting a better product. This is simply not true," asserts McMillan.

As the ace up the sleeve of clone machines, McMillan points out that support for clones, in most cases, is better and faster than that of their branded equivalents. "Branded machines typically need to go back to vendors overseas, or are sent to third party maintenance, which takes time. Added to this is the risk of unaccountability of third party maintenance work," he states.

"Clearly, when purchasing a new PC, there is a lot more to be considered than just the price of the machine. In business terms, that means service, support and the right machine for the job - requirements that can be addressed capably by recognised manufacturers of cloned machines," concludes McMillan.
