Brazil`s EDITORA O DIA S.A. selects Unisys publishing solutions for leading newspapers

By Unisys
Johannesburg, 05 Aug 1998

Unisys Corporation today announced an agreement with EDITORA O DIA S.A. in Rio de Janeiro, publisher of newspapers O Dia and A Not!cia, to install the Unisys Publishing Solutions at both newspapers.

O Dia, the second-largest daily newspaper in Brazil, has a daily circulation of over 350,000 and over 780,000 on Sundays. The newspaper is one of the most successful papers in recent Brazilian history.

The system will be installed in a brand new, state-of-the-art newsroom, where the Unisys solutions will be used to produce O Dia and the smaller A Not!cia.

Under the terms of the agreement, Unisys will install 222 editorial workstations with the Hermes editorial and pagination system and WireCenter, the wire services and remote

communication management system. DocCenter, the multimedia archiving application, will be installed on over 200 workstations and replace an existing image archive at O Dia. The Hermes, WireCenter, and DocCenter applications will be powered by dual Sun E5500 High Availability (HA) servers.

The Unisys Publishing Solutions will bring the latest in client/server technology to O Dia. The superior integration and superb edition-handling capabilities of the Unisys Publishing Solutions will enhance the newspaper`s ability to offer its readers comprehensive regional coverage throughout the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. Moreover, this highly productive system will allow O Dia and A Not!cia`s reporters and editors to revise stories directly on the pages--just minutes before deadline.

"What most called our attention to the Unisys Publishing Solutions was the fact that we can simplify and shorten our production workflow. A highly flexible solution is fundamental for our paper, which produces eight editions," said Ruth de Aquino, Chief Editor of O Dia.

Moreover, explained Joao Carlos R. Dalbello, Director of Information Technology for O Dia, "We were looking for an integrated solution and a strong partner able to satisfy our growing publishing needs well into the next century."

The Unisys Publishing Solutions

The Unisys Publishing Solutions are currently used by more than 80 newspapers in 10 countries. Recent sales in the U.S. include The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News, and the New York Daily News. In Brazil, O Dia is the second large publishing company to purchase the Unisys Publishing Solutions. In 1997, O Estado de S. Paulo purchased a 450-seat system that is currently in live production.

Unisys provides one of the most comprehensive newspaper publishing solutions available with a complete editorial, electronic pagination, and archiving system. The solutions run on several server platforms with mainstream databases and use PCs as clients with applications running in Windows 95 and NT. Unisys systems integration expertise and capabilities allow the integration of existing proprietary and off-the-shelf specialty packages with the Unisys Publishing Solutions.
