Mobile broadband wireless has the potential to slash the banking industry`s expenditure on telecommunications, which is one of its biggest costs, says Wireless Business Solutions chief operations officer Thami Mtshali.
[VIDEO]"Because of the environment that the banks are involved in, they require serious redundancies," he told ITWeb after speaking at the BMI-TechKnowledge African Banking Forum in Midrand last week.
"So they require many, many leased lines and many, many telephone lines," he says.
"And over and above that, they also require remote access for some of their staff."
Mtshali says mobile broadband comes at lower prices than cellular, since there is a difference in the capital infrastructure involved.
He adds that insurer Llloyd`s of London uses mobile broadband at accident sites. Damage is evaluated, quotations are given, and even payments are made - all on site.
"That`s customer satisfaction," he comments.
