Broadband Infraco successfully tests Layer 2 Carrier Ethernet services

Johannesburg, 14 Dec 2012

Broadband Infraco has successfully completed two proof of concept (POC) trials with external parties, as part of its product development process of Layer 2 Carrier Ethernet services. The latter will enable the SOC to - in addition to its existing Time Division Multiplex (TDM) based (STM1-64) services - provide IP-based services in smaller capacities such as 20Mb and 50Mb.

The POC trials were tested on the “Golden Triangle” (Johannesburg-Cape Town-Durban), and the scope of work included:

* RFC 2544 (request for comments) attributes such as: throughput, latency, frame loss, error rate, delay and back-to-back test.
* VLAN tagging and Q-in-Q.
* OAM (operations administration and maintenance).
* QOS (quality of service) mechanisms such as: service policy, traffic shaping, congestion avoidance and management.
* 24-hour BER Ethernet test.

The results of these two trials demonstrate an excellent quality of service in terms of transmission quality and service availability. Quality of the network was measured using the following factors: packet loss, delay, jitter and throughput.

The adoption of Internet Protocol (IP) as a core technology platform for telecommunications and for broadcasting technology means the demand for IP-based products continues to increase. Broadband Infraco plans to conduct similar POCs with other partners as it prepares to launch its IP-based services in 2013.
