Communications minister Yunus Carrim hopes to have final consultation on the draft national broadband policy finalised by the first week of December.

A two-day international workshop hosted by the Ministry of Communications kicks off in Pretoria today.

Hosted at the CSIR International Convention Centre, the workshop will bring together 16 international experts from 14 countries to assist SA to benchmark its broadband policy and learn from other countries how they developed and implemented their broadband policies, says the ministry in a statement.

Some of the attendees will be representatives from the World Bank and the International Telecommunication Union.

A range of experts will also comment on the latest draft of the broadband policy and plan.

"The policy has identified four strategic areas, which are readiness, digital development, digital opportunity and digital future," says the statement.

"These strategic areas of focus give expression to the ICT vision of the National Development Plan to utilise universal broadband to ensure an increase in growth, development and job-creation in an inclusive manner."

Two weeks ago, communications minister Yunus Carrim said the draft national broadband policy will be taken to the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission, government's economic cluster, before making its way to Cabinet.

Carrim said the department hopes to conclude the final consultation on the policy before the last Cabinet meeting in the first week of December. "If the policy is not approved, we will consider releasing a version of it in the public domain for further consideration."
