Brocade Selected for Veritas Vertex initiative demonstration at Veritas software`s annual users` conference

By Veritas Software
Johannesburg, 27 Oct 2000

Brocade Communications Systems, Inc, the leading provider of Storage Area infrastructure, and VERITAS , The Availability Company, today announced that Brocade will support the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative for next-generation enterprise data protection, which was announced today by VERITAS Software at VERITAS VISION 2000, the company`s annual users` conference in Las Vegas.

Brocade`s support for the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative builds on the existing partnership between the two companies and their collaboration to optimize VERITAS Software applications, such as VERITAS SANPoint Control, over the Brocade storage area networking infrastructure. The VERITAS VERTEX Initiative comprises a series of VERITAS NetBackup data protection solutions designed to take full advantage of storage area network (SAN) architectures, with no downtime and no effect on production servers. Brocade SilkWorm Fibre Channel fabric switches are being used by VERITAS Software in VERITAS VERTEX Initiative product demonstrations, including VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V and NetBackup ServerFree Agent, at the VERITAS Sofware users` conference. The Internet revolution has dramatically increased the growth of business-critical data, causing organizations to quickly outgrow traditional backup and recovery methods. Information technology managers need to provide access to data around the clock, with no dedicated tim e available to backup the huge volumes of data they oversee. Running on a Brocade-based storage area network (SAN) using a Brocade SilkWorm 2800 Fibre Channel fabric switch, VERITAS Software will demonstrate how organizations can protect their data without having effect on network bandwidth and network server resources. The VERITAS VISION2000 demonstration shows how data can be backed up directly from disk to tape without the involvement of an application or database server in a SAN environment. This means business enterprises will be able to protect critical information with no loss of performance or data availability.

Brocade Fibre Channel fabric switches provide the world`s leading networking foundation for storage area networks. Using Brocade SilkWorm switches, customers can connect servers with storage devices through a SAN, creating a highly reliable and scalable environment for storage applications. VERITAS Software is a Brocade Fabric API partner, leveraging the value-added management capabilities and services of the Brocade Fabric OS, which is a robust, distributed operating system for Brocade-based SANs. Fabric OS provides an intelligent SAN infrastructure that enables companies to create and scale highly resilient multiswitch SANs and easily manage the SAN infrastructure.

"The VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent is an example of a SAN-designed application that will deliver significant benefits to our mutual customers," said Jack Cuthbert, Brocade vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "The demonstration over a Brocade-based SAN underscores our strategic partnership with VERITAS Software and our goal to enable applications that take full advantage of the Brocade intelligent foundation for storage. We expect the near future to bring many more innovative SAN management solutions to the marketplace: solutions that will greatly improve productivity, security, and interoperability for storage area networks."

The VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent combines server-free data movement technology with snapshot or "frozen image" backup technology, the process of taking a "point-in-time" recording of data. This combination reduces the backup impact on the production server, and reduces the time it takes to back up data, resulting in high-performance data protection for SAN environments.

"SAN infrastructure suppliers such as Brocade play an important role in helping companies manage and protect the critical data that is growing at an exponential rate each year," said Neal Ater, senior vice president, Data Protection Product Group, VERITAS Software. "VERITAS Software is working closely with Brocade to ensure complete interoperability between our leading products and the Brocade SAN infrastructure."
