An initiative established by BSW Telecoms keeps the company at the forefront of technology and provides considerable benefits to its client base.
Called Dreamworks, it is run as a separate initiative within BSW Telecoms. By seconding its "bright stars" to Dreamworks for six-month sabbaticals, BSW Telecoms has a head start on emerging trends and technologies.
Customers benefit from the projects undertaken by Dreamworks because BSW Telecoms is ideally positioned to assist with defining visions for the future. Due to Dreamworks, BSW Telecoms is ready to lead both the market and its customer base.
One of the criteria for a Dreamworks project is that it has to be relevant, offering tangible advantages in a live working environment. In order to qualify, proposed projects must fall in line with BSW Telecoms` business strategy. The result of any investigation must improve the technical and business performance of customers, and be in line with telecommunications trends.
The intensive learning gained while on Dreamworks projects is taken back into the project delivery-driven part of the organisation. Competition within BSW Telecoms to join the Dreamworks team is fierce. Employees are encouraged to apply, but only the most experienced, highly qualified achievers are seconded to Dreamworks. This approach results in projects of a superior standard.
Solutions Architect Peter Faller, who is currently on secondment to Dreamworks, joined BSW Telecoms in 1992. He has worked on a number of high-level projects in recent times as a team leader in development. His experience includes:
Fault and Trouble Management;
Performance Management; and
Fraud Management.
Menahem Fuchs, Senior Technical Specialist at BSW Telecoms, recently completed his secondment to Dreamworks. He comments on his experience: "It was a period to recharge and realign with what`s happening in the field. It was great to investigate and experiment with emerging technologies. The time spent in Dreamworks allowed me to recalibrate my understanding of what to look forward to and renewed my enthusiasm for the field of telecommunications."
Projects undertaken by Dreamworks include:
Investigation of the applicability of the JavaTM language and Enterprise JavaBeanTM for integration of distributed Operations Support Systems;
Investigation of the opportunities presented by mobile data technologies, specifically WAP (Wireless Application Protocol);
A feasibility study for the production of intelligent data acquisition devices;
Investigation into the impact of number portability on operators;
Investigation into the issues which make event correlation difficult to implement;
Benchmarking the performance of CORBA as in inter-OSS communication mechanism; and
A study of Voice over IP (VoIP).
